Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers had an emotional day on February 2, 1996. He faced Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and the Chicago Bulls in his second game back after his HIV sickness.
The Bulls came into the contest with an astounding 40-3 record. The Lakers, on the other hand, were just 25-18. Jordan and Magic were good friends, so it’s likely they were looking forward to facing off for the first time since Game 5 of the 1991 Finals.
Pippen, on the other hand, was the star of the show, both on and off the court.

By a score of 99-84, the Bulls handily trounced the Lakers. Pippen finished with a game-high 30 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc in 33 minutes. In addition, the superstar small forward had four rebounds and five assists.
Jordan and Magic were outplayed by Pippen. MJ scored 17 points, while Magic scored 15. With the victory, the Bulls advanced to 41-3 and have now won 18 games in a row.
Jordan and Magic spoke with the media after the game to discuss the game and Magic’s return to the NBA. Meanwhile, from the Bulls’ locker room, Pippen chatted to reporters and provided some fiery soundbites.
In the second half, the Bulls never trailed by less than 13 points and led by as much as 26 points in the fourth quarter. Pippen, the game’s MVP, was so dissatisfied with the Lakers that he annihilated Magic’s teammates at his postgame news conference.

Before contracting HIV, Magic was a five-time NBA champion and three-time Finals MVP with the Lakers. In a 1996 game against the Bulls, the Hall of Famer had 15 points and three assists on 6-of-13 shooting. Pippen was thrilled by what he saw from a rusty 36-year-old Magic, but he understood the Lakers as a whole weren’t the same.
Pippen said, “Magic is very much the same.” “He isn’t hanging out with the same men, and they still have a long way to go before they can be called competitors.” We thought we’d figured out how to get into the game’s rhythm. We discovered some scoring opportunities in their defense and were finally able to draw away from them.”
The Bulls won 72 games in the regular season in 1995-96. In the Finals, they beat the Seattle SuperSonics, earning Jordan and Pippen four rings. Meanwhile, the 1995-96 Lakers ended 53-29 and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Houston Rockets. In the summer, Magic announced his retirement from the NBA for good.
Magic was forced to miss four seasons due to HIV. The Bulls and Lakers may have met in numerous Finals instead of just the one they did in 1991 if the 12-time All-Star hadn’t taken ill. From start to end, it was a fantastic series to watch, at least for Chicago fans.

In the 1991 Finals, the Bulls enjoyed home-court advantage. However, they were defeated in Game 1 by the Lakers by two points, and most experts projected that the Lakers would win the series.
Jordan and Pippen, on the other hand, had different plans.
In Game 2, Bulls coach Phil Jackson placed Pippen on Magic. Against Pippen, one of the finest defenders in NBA history, the Lakers legend had four turnovers. The Bulls won 107-86 and never looked back, going on to win the following three games as well to earn their first title in club history.
After averaging 31.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 11.4 assists in the Finals, Jordan was named MVP. Meanwhile, Pippen averaged 20.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 2.4 steals per game in the series.
In the summer of 1992, Jordan, Pippen, and Magic became colleagues on the Dream Team. They shared the gold medal and will be eternally united.
