After the 2019 season, the Colts acquired DeForest Buckner from the 49ers.
For a few years, the 49ers had one of the most powerful defenses in the NFL, thanks to a strong defensive line. DeForest Buckner was a key cog on a line that also included Dee Ford, Arik Armstead, and Nick Bosa.
Buckner finished the season with 62 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. The Oregon product has established himself as one of the league’s most fearsome interior defensive lineman.
General manager John Lynch and the front office, on the other hand, found themselves in a financial bind. Buckner’s deal was large, and the 49ers couldn’t afford to keep him. Lynch worked with Chris Ballard, the general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, to strike a deal.
In exchange for the No. 13 overall choice in the 2020 NFL Draft, San Francisco sent their star defensive lineman to Indianapolis. Lynch felt compelled to make the move.
The 49ers picked defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw of South Carolina with the draft selection they obtained. The Colts have gotten themselves a defensive cornerstone.

DeForest Buckner, regardless of position, was one of the most gifted defensive players in the 2020 NFL Draft class. In the San Francisco defense, he rapidly became a pro success.
In four seasons with the 49ers, the Hawaii native amassed 263 tackles, 38 tackles for loss, 28.5 sacks, and seven fumble recoveries. San Francisco has a top-10 defense in 2019, and Buckner was a big part of it.

Buckner is 6’7″ tall and weighs 295 pounds. He’s a towering figure with deceptive agility and outstanding technique. Through the Colts’ first six games, Pro Football Focus awarded the All-Pro a grade of 73.7.
John Lynch was adamant on not trading Buckner. “Probably the most difficult thing I’ve done as a general manager here.” “It’s a challenging aspect of the job,” Lynch told ESPN. “I don’t believe you can fully prepare yourself for when you move on from a player that represents everything you want to be about.”
Buckner has to have a strong game in his return to San Francisco for the Colts.
